Guidelines for Writing Your Story
- Create a comfortable, relaxed environment, free from interruptions.
- View your writing with a sense of discovery, adventure, anticipation, and joy.
- Write for no more than 30 to 60 minutes per session, leaving a three-to five-day interval between sessions.
- At each session, write down the experiences and feelings you had over a five- to ten-year period of your life. As you get closer to the present, cover-only one or two years per session.
- The writing process may take several months.
- Write in the third person at all times – be the observer or witness,
- Don’t analyze or judge what you write.
- Write candidly and truthfully, without sparing anyone’s feelings.
- Don’t share what you’ve written until you’re finished, and only do so then if you so choose.
- If experience pop into your memory randomly, write them down. Record everything that comes into your mind, no matter where you are in your writing process at the time. (For example, if you’re writing about ages 10 to 15 and you suddenly remember something that happened when you were 25, write that down and revisit it later, when you’re working on the years 20 to 25.)
- Read your entire story to yourself.
- Reread it every 40 days or so to appreciate its fullness and your history.
- Get a sense of how you would have liked your story to unfold.

- Embark on the process of creating a “fantasy” of what you would have wanted to look like, what you would have preferred your family and home life to be like, what you wish you could have become, and so forth. Remember, you’re now making the impossible, possible!
- Read your rewritten story whenever you need a pick-me-up and a reminder of all the possibilities your life presents you with as it continues to unfold.
